City of Tshwane’s African Sister Cities Initiative (ASCI) Side Event

7 June 2018
Pretoria, South Africa

The City of Tshwane’s Executive Mayor, Cllr Solly Msimanga, invited a select group of African capital city mayors, as well as private and public partners, to the African Sister Cities’ Initiative (ASCI) side event, themed “Continental Renewal through Ubuntu“. The purpose of the side event was to create a platform for strategic dialogue around greater collaboration between African capital cities across six thematic areas: regional trade and investment, climate change resilience, cross-cultural understanding, safety and security, health and youth empowerment. To that end, the key objectives of the side event were:

  1. sensitise African mayors regarding the scope of the ASCI;
  2. demonstrate potential areas of engagement under the ASCI; and
  3. articulate the next steps towards closer collaboration.

The event was attended by forty-eight representatives from local government, the private sector, NGOs, as well as eight African city mayors, and two Ambassadors from  diplomatic missions. ReNAPRI was represented by Chairman of the ReNAPRI Board, Prof. Emilio Tostao; and Chair of the Technical Committee, Ms. Lulama Traub.

Prof. Emilio Tostao, presented on ReNAPRI’s proposed contribution towards ASCI projects. His presentation can be found here.
